House training your retriever may not be all the dog games you had imagined when you first got him. But you will surely be very satisfied once the training is completed and you keep a trained dog at home, as opposed to a messy, untrained dog. Nothing beats the satisfaction of a pet owner observing his trained dog do the potty where he is supposed to do it.
